The Pacific plåtboxen är nu äntligen ute på DVD och Bluray lagom till jul. För vad passar bättre i julklapp än årets absolut bästa serie även om den inte riktigt ledde fram till förväntningarna efter tidernas mest uppskattade serie – Band of Brothers.

Handling

I tio avsnitt får vi följa marinsoldaterna Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge och John Basilone under dramatiska strider på klassiska platser som Guadalcanal och Iwo Jima. The Pacific är en av dem mest påkostade TV-serierna som har gjorts och den är producerad av Steven Spielberg och Tom Hanks.

Kriget är över och marinsoldaterna funderar över hur framtiden hemma i USA kan tänkas bli. Robert Leckie återvänder till sin familj där han får tillbaka sitt gamla journalistjobb och börjar träffa Vera som bor rakt över gatan. Eugene Sledge kommer hem 6 månader efter VJ-dagen och möts upp av sin gamla barndomskamrat Sidney Phillips på stationen. Eugene har stora problem att återgå till det civila livet då han saknar utbildning (utöver att döda), plågas av mardrömmar och ifrågasätter varför han klarade sig.

When I stepped up to the table at the head of the line, a pretty brunette about my age (probably a student’s wife) asked pleasantly what schools I had attended in the Marine Corps. I recited all the weapons and tactics schools we had in training.

She became more and more disconcerted as she looked in vain on her checklist for anything remotely resembling what I was saying. Finally, in desperation, she slammed her pencil on the table and said in a loud, exasperated voice, ”Didn’t the Marine Corps teach you anything?!” A gasp ran through the crowd, and you could have heard a pin drop. I didn’t lose my temper, but I realized that, like most civilians, war to this lady meant John Wayne or the sweet musical South Pacific.

Slowly placing my hands on the table, aware that all eyes were upon us, I said in a loud, calm voice: ”Lady, there was a killing war. The Marine Corps taught me how to kill Japs and try to survive. Now, if that don’t fit into any academic course, I’m sorry. But some of us had to do the killing – and most of my buddies got killed or wounded”.

She was speechless. There were many red faces among the obvious noncombatants present. I doubt if there were a half dozen infantrymen or tankers present.

Det som slog mig mest under den avslutande genomgången var att jag inte kände igen alla personerna och det är väl i huvudsak där The Pacific har misslyckats i jämförelse med Band of Brothers. I BoB så lär vi känna samtliga karaktärer och det är förhållandevis enkelt att se skillnad på dem. Utöver huvudpersonerna och Snafu så har jag svårt att se skillnad och det krävs att man ser igenom serien en andra gång för att verkligen kunna ta del av hur bra den egentligen är.

Kriget i stilla havet närmar sig nu sitt slut och första marindivisionen slåss på Okinawa där vädret och hettan ställer till stora problem samtidigt som allt fler börjar drabbas psykiskt av kriget. Ständig stress och eviga strider resulterar i en mängd olika reaktioner. För första gången så tvingas man även ta hänsyn till civilbefolkningen vilket inte alltid fungerar som önskat. I slutet av avsnittet sprids ryktet om en ny typ av bomb som kan slå ut en hel stad.

För dig som är intresserad att läsa mer om striderna vid Okinawa så rekommenderar jag varmt Wikipedia där man även tar upp ämnen vi inte fick se i The Pacific. Däribland våldtäkter som tros ha lett fram till Kurombo Gama.

Efter intagandet av Peleliu, ön där första marindivisionen förlorade en tredjedel av sina män utan att den kom till användning, så återvände resten av manskapet till Pavuvu för att vila upp inför nästa uppdrag. I USA bestämmer sig John Basilone för att komma tillbaka till marinkåren och placeras på Camp Pendleton som instruktör. Där träffar han Sgt. Lena Riggi som inte låter sig bli lockad av hans kändisskap. Efter långt om länge så uppstår en förälskelse och det blir ett snabbt bröllop innan Basilone skickas till Iwo Jima.

Åter igen har vi ett fantastiskt avsnitt och John Basilone är verkligen en beundransvärd man. Jag läste på mer om honom och hittade hans hedersomnämnande. Först ut är Medal of Honor som låter på följande vis:

For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action against enemy Japanese forces, above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division in the Lunga Area. Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 24 and 25 October 1942. While the enemy was hammering at the Marines’ defensive positions, Sgt. Basilone, in charge of 2 sections of heavy machine guns, fought valiantly to check the savage and determined assault. In a fierce frontal attack with the Japanese blasting his guns with grenades and mortar fire, one of Sgt. Basilone’s sections, with its guncrews, was put out of action, leaving only 2 men able to carry on. Moving an extra gun into position, he placed it in action, then, under continual fire, repaired another and personally manned it, gallantly holding his line until replacements arrived. A little later, with ammunition critically low and the supply lines cut off, Sgt. Basilone, at great risk of his life and in the face of continued enemy attack, battled his way through hostile lines with urgently needed shells for his gunners, thereby contributing in large measure to the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment. His great personal valor and courageous initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Därefter har vi Navy Cross som delades ut efter hans död vid Iwo Jima.

For extraordinary heroism while serving as a Leader of a Machine-Gun Section, Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, 19 February 1945. Shrewdly gauging the tactical situation shortly after landing when his company’s advance was held up by the concentrated fire of a heavily fortified Japanese blockhouse, Gunnery Sergeant Basilone boldly defied the smashing bombardment of heavy caliber fire to work his way around the flank and up to a position directly on top of the blockhouse and then, attacking with grenades and demolitions, single handedly destroyed the entire hostile strong point and its defending garrison. Consistently daring and aggressive as he fought his way over the battle-torn beach and up the sloping, gun-studded terraces toward Airfield Number 1, he repeatedly exposed himself to the blasting fury of exploding shells and later in the day coolly proceeded to the aid of a friendly tank which had been trapped in an enemy mine field under intense mortar and artillery barrages, skillfully guiding the heavy vehicle over the hazardous terrain to safety, despite the overwhelming volume of hostile fire. In the forefront of the assault at all times, he pushed forward with dauntless courage and iron determination until, moving upon the edge of the airfield, he fell, instantly killed by a bursting mortar shell. Stouthearted and indomitable, Gunnery Sergeant Basilone, by his intrepid initiative, outstanding skill, and valiant spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of the fanatic opposition, contributed materially to the advance of his company during the early critical period of the assault, and his unwavering devotion to duty throughout the bitter conflict was an inspiration to his comrades and reflects the highest credit upon Gunnery Sergeant Basilone and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

Precis som i fallet med John så läste jag på om Lena Mae Riggi Basilone som aldrig gifte om sig. Enligt flera källor så ska Lena ha sagt att hon redan hade haft det bästa och att hon därför inte kunde nöja sig med något mindre.
